This and That

86

As a 1930s wife, I am
Very Superior

Take the test!

I saw this over at Allison's and had to check it out. How funny. I must confess to not washing the milk bottle tops, nor wearing stockings, nor giving my husband a shampoo or manicure. Apparently those don't count for too much. Not sure how I'd rate here in 2008...Guess I'm just behind the times, as usual.

I can tell you how I'm rating as a Mommy today: not the best. Dumpling is sleeping, though how he is managing it over Pumpkin's tantrum that is going on in Timeout, I have no idea. Personally, I've just turned up my music so as not to have to listen to him. Daddy left for the week on Friday. I think we're (the boys and I) just having a bit too time together time. Too bad Sweetheart is gone until Thursday. asdkjjljrioerrioieriejjoioreoiadknkf! It's been going really well until about 20 minutes ago.

On to other things....

I am canning while Sweetheart is gone. This is the first time I've ever attempted it, but I've got everything in place ready to go. I made some strawberry jam last night and since I bought a flat of strawberries, I've got more to do. The jam hasn't jelled yet though I did cook it to the jelling point temperature wise based on my candy thermometer and adjusting for our high altitude. I guess we'll just have strawberry sauce.

I also bought a half-bushel of tomatoes for salsa and spaghetti sauces. I'm planning to tackle those this evening after the boys are in bed. Still reading recipes to find one I like.

I must say that having the right tools makes the job much easier! I bought a Canning Utensil Set yesterday. Usually, I would just try to make do with what I have, but I am so glad I spent the money on this. I'll try to add a link to a set later, if I can.

I received my beautiful items from Sandy's Art Swap the other day and I must say that I love them all. Since Sweetheart has the camera with him, pictures will be done later. In fact, I probably won't be able to post any pictures this week. He told me he's taking some great shots in Hawaii. Can't wait to see them, though I'd rather just SEE HIM!!! And no, not because Pumpkin is still pitching a fit upstairs, but just because I miss HIM.

He is in Hawaii for a conference his company is putting on. So basically, he got a first-class, all-expense paid trip to Hawaii for our 10th Anniversary. And I'm here. We tried to figure out a way for me to go, but finances and little boys made it just not realistic. Plus, I'd be in Hawaii sitting in the hotel room, or trying to keep little boys from throwing themselves into the ocean, while he is in meetings morning to night. I wouldn't even be able to join him for the evening events without a babysitter. It made more sense for me to just stay home. Besides, the events of the last few weeks have been such as to not make me wish to be anywhere else right now. I'd rather be at home.

Time to go now. Back to being Mommy!

Hi Kimberly -
I'll pray for you this week. For sanity and peace. I forget what it was like when my now-grown kids were little. Until yesterday when my youngest granddaughter through a temper tantrum. Or when I read what you're doing to 'ignore' Pumpkin's noise. It brings back such memories. You will survive. I promise. Your canning and jam sound so good. Wish I lived closer - I would help you. Entertain the boys or help with the canning!

I'll be praying that you have a smooth week.
It's too bad that you weren't able to go to Hawaii with him, but understandable under the circumstances.
I hope your canning experience is a good one. I don't can every year, but I have when we've had our own excess produce. We haven't even had a garden for about 4 years because we had thought we were moving and tore our raised beds out to improve the backyard-then we didn't move and still haven't put in new beds. I've been promised a garden for this fall though. :-)
I will pray for you and will try to check back again but I'm getting ready to take a bit of an internet sabbatical and won't be checking my favorite blogs as regularly.
Take care of yourself,
Michelle

Oh, that quiz is so much fun! I took it and then I did it for my husband. I want to have him do it and see how our scores compare. I'll have to do a post about it, too.

I need to post my swap pictures, too. I got one of your tags. (Which reminds me, I forgot to sign mine.) I am making a Little House "display" in my home, and the swap items are perfect for that!

It sounds like you don't believe in spanking. Dh and I have never allowed our children to throw temper tantrums-that is unbiblical. (check proverbs about controlling ones anger)
I'm an older mom with older children than you, and I would really encourage you to stop following the worlds way of parenting (time out) and follow the Lord's instead.
Hints on Child Training is a good book by Trumbull.
Traditional parenting is best. :)

For you to have to turn the music up so you don't have to listen to your son's temper tantrum....who is in control? Your son is. Time outs are for parents who believe spanking is child abuse-for Christian parents, we have the Bible, which talks about using the rod. In time out, a child can continue pitching a fit, screaming, kicking his feet...whatever he wants, as long as he does it on a chair. That is ridiculous.
Please rethink your parenting beliefs.
My oldest son, when he was a toddler, would run down the hallway and throw himself on the floor in a temper tantrum. Dh only had to spank him a few times for this, and he never did it again. To this day, as a teenager, he doesn't have a temper problem.
Using the rod works!
p.s. We didn't use it for every infraction but for temper fits I definitely would. Learn to control your child! You'll be blessed! You don't want him having temper fits as a teenager!

Kimberly, I am so happy to hear you are canning and getting back into the routines you enjoy. I was very sad to hear of your loss (a good friend of mine recently went through the same thing) but know our Heavenly Father is comforting you. BTW, that friend I mentioned is now expecting another bundle of joy. It's so amazing how God always restores, isn't it? Much love, Brenna

Joly,
I believe you were trying to encourage Kimberly, but perhaps you ought to do it "one on one" (private email)versus correcting her in "public" on HER webpage...Biblically speaking and all.

Sometimes a "timeout" can be good for a mommy who is struggling to maintain her self-control so as to not harm the dear child. This is coming from a mommy who believes in using the rod. Please re-think your approach with advice.

Kimberly,
I am praying for you. I remember those days. When DH travels the days can seem VERY long.

RE: jam not setting. It can take 24 hours. Also, I have instructions "What to do if your cooked jam doesn't set", if you need them call me.

Love you,
Carey

Oh Kim,
I'm with you all the way!!!

The canning sounds fun...the only thing I can around here is Paul's bad humor... but no one is interested in buying his old jokes!

Joly...just wondering....are you referring to yourself when referring to "controlling one's anger"?

As I recall....Christ piched a royal fit in the Temple.
Certainly seemed appropriate at the time.
