When we had a cow that we were sharing the milk with the calf, we left the calf in a stall in the barn...that way the cow was 'glad' to come to the barn to get the relief of being milked...I think we milked a couple teats first and let the calf have the rest.
Also, with the calf in the barn, you can 'play' with it and it will be so gentle and used to you that you can do anything with it later on if you keep it.
