Blessed Assurance

Blessed Assurance

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
angels descending bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, all is at rest;
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love.

This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

Text: Fanny J. Crosby, 1820-1915
Music: Phoebe P. Knapp, 1839-1908

Cyber Hymnal

Fanny Crosby was probably the most prolific hymnist in history. Though blinded by an incompetent doctor at six weeks of age, she wrote over 8,000 hymns. About her blindness, she said:

It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.

In her lifetime, Fanny Crosby was one of the best known women in the United States. To this day, the vast majority of American hymnals contain her work.

I wasn't raised singing hymns by any means, but somewhere along the way I heard this one. I have loved it ever since. Pumpkin enjoys having it sung to him as well.

Shelley Jo remembers her grandmother singing this, and other Fanny Crosby hymns. Check out her story here.

I posted a little about this song on my blog. My paternal grandmother used to walk around singing this (and other hymns); I would mock her and think she was so "lame." She'd take me to church, but never really told me how to become a Christian. But God found me and rescued me anyway, and now those hymns she used to sing are so special to me. When I hear one, I can't help but tear up remembering my special Grandma Hattie.

Shelley Jo,
I'd be happy to link to your post, if you'd like me to. I want to add to the posting today, or tomorrow with some history on Fanny Crosby. She was so interesting to me.

Beautiful Hymn! I especially love this one; I have a piano arrangement of it that I just love to play.

Thank you for sharing. (And don't you just love Cyberhymnal? I've popped in there for several years now; it's a blessing to have hymns at our fingertips!)

:o)
