Dear Friends

Yesterday morning my friend, Roisin, hosted a gathering of friends so that I could see everyone before we move. Wasn't that sweet of her? It truly was a lovely time.

The years have not been easy. There have been severe trials that we have clung to one another through and others that we are still in the midst of. We been together through many births, rejoicing in new little lovies. One of these wee ones was born still, one had a stroke in utero, one arrived through adoption, and others born without any troubles at all.
We've walked together supporting one through cancer and will continue to need to support another through her husband's battle with ALS. We prayed and played through times of unemployment, moving, marital difficulties and now the trying times of teenage girls. Some have left the group to return again and others have sadly just withdrawn and started new lives without us, though they are missed.

Some of us are silly, noisy, hypercompetive, can't keep score, never remember what number we are on, or just come for the food and fun and couldn't care less about the game.
But through it all, these women have been my best friends. Some I may only see once a month, others of us gather together regularly. And no matter what, we would do anything for one another.
All I know is that I will miss each one of you terribly and I hope you come visit soon.
PS-There's an opening in the group now. Want to join?

(She got to ditch school for a bit to come say goodbye. Love you Lindsey!)

Last Day of August

I had gone to lay down and rest one evening early. That lasted about two minutes before I had company.

I thought August would drag by, but I am sitting here amazed that it is the last day of the month already.

We've kept busy trying to see friends, run errands, start homepreschool and generally get ready for the new family member. I've been cooking up a storm so that we have food to eat after the baby arrives. Sweetheart really doesn't cook unless fire is involved. So I've made up a bunch of stuff that just needs to be baked/reheated and bought a bunch of meat for him to grill.

I've been doing some of the work over several days unlike last time when I had my Mom over and we did a cooking frenzy all in one day. I just don't have the energy for that right now. Plus, this house isn't as conducive to that sort of thing. Making dinner for the eight of us in my Bunco group that met here last week was enough for one day! This week my focus is on trying to bake as much as I can to freeze. I want to have enough bread and other stuff like muffins and banana bread to make meals easy.

I am planning on making and freezing a bunch of my easy quiches, but am struggling to find eggs. All the local ladies that sell them are swamped because of the salmonella scare. Even the stores around here are out. I am on three waiting lists, so I will probably have more eggs than I can cook at the end of the week!

In other news: I am excited to announce that my cousin had her baby yesterday- a little girl--Eleanor Grace, named for our Grandmother. I am so happy for her and glad to hear all is well! (Must admit to wishing I had had our baby yesterday. I would really like to have this baby.)

I am also asking for prayer for two friends. Bonnie, a virtual friend and loooong time reader, is due soon , but the baby is footling breech. I am praying that baby will turn asap. Also, I have mentioned before my friend Wendy who has been battling breast cancer. She finished her chemo two weeks ago and is scheduled for a double mastectomy today. Please pray for her and her family.

BTW-The baby's due date is September 11th so we are down to the final weeks. Here's to hoping this one is closer to being born on time.

Sitting

This is one of those rare moments since we've moved that I find myself alone. Well, not really alone as Pumpkin is sleeping across the room, but alone enough. Now I am sitting here in blessed silence and find I have nothing to write. Ironic.

I would like to share a new recipe, or project, or bit of news, but I can't. I am just cooking the basics as we need them, all my crafts and special projects are packed, and I having nothing new to share. Although I did figure out how to upload some pictures from our trip.

Stuck in this place between all that was familiar and all I am dreaming of, I am feeling the uprootedness of it all. This is not a complaint, nor do I regret what has happened. I find myself thinking in the few moments of quiet about a lot. How I see things, my ideas of home, my identity and more.

So while I may not have much to share at this time, my heart and mind are so full. And I am grateful.

I have traveled a bit back in time these last few weeks from staying with my Mom to traveling to my Dad's and stepmother's home. Driving past the home I was raised in during our trip back for my reunion, seeing how altered everything is is interesting. Fourteen years in one home and a lifetime of memories.

Hanging out with old, dear friends visiting a few of the places we spent spent most of our lives: home, school, church. It is all still there, but so different. As were we. And yet, still at our roots, the same. Wishing I had more time with them all brings tears to my eyes even now.

The joy of sitting at a table with two of my dearest friends just talking, laughing and eating was a balm to my soul. Smiling as one of them sang along with the music playing as she ate, probably not even noticing she was, as she always was, singing. The comfort of knowing we would all be friends, forever. (Wondering who of my old friends will catch that song reference.)

Our pasts, our faith, our lives, and our futures will always be intertwined I think. And I am so glad. I only wish that we still all lived just a few miles away from one another. I would love to be raising our families together and simply hanging out laughing with each other. I am truly blessed to have them in my life.

Smiling as I think of these friendships, and looking at these wonderful pictures of the special guys in my life, I know that even though this is not an easy season it is just a season.

(Can I just say how much I miss my garden though?)

Great Resource

I wanted to share with you all an amazing resource my friends discovered while trying to coordinate help for my friend Wendy's treatments. It is called Lotsa Helping Hands. You basically set up a free community for someone in need. There are places to put updates, but the great feature is a calendar to coordinate all the volunteer efforts.

When you sign in to help your friend you'll see a calendar that lists the days and help needed. You can sign up directly and a message is sent to the coordinators. It will even send you reminder emails about what you have signed up for. Everyone can see at a glance what is needed as sign up as they are able. Sure beats having to have someone calling everyone and following up and repeating the same things over and over.

Please continue to pray for them. Thanks!

Zzzzz

I am still here. I am doing great with no morning sickness at all. (must be a girl) I am just tired. So, most afternoons if I get the boys to sleep I am laying down, too. My productivity has been slashed except that I am busy making another human. Naptime is my usual time to blog, but I think being awake when the boys are is more important. :) I will write as I am able.
I do have one request. One of my dearest friends was just diagnosed last week with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. She is a wonderful wife and mother of four little ones. She will begin chemo next week. All of us are trying to rally around and help out however we can. Please keep Wendy & her family in your prayers. Thank you!

Autumn Luncheon

Yesterday I had my Mom and two ladies over for lunch. One of the ladies owns Berry Patch Farms, our home away from home. Her sister has just moved here and so we wanted to get to know them both better.
It was a cold, snowy, drizzly day. But we stayed snug with visiting and soups and hot teas and coffee. They stayed for several hours and we all just got to take a break and relax. This has been such a busy season for them at the farm so I really appreciated that they would take a few hours out of their busy schedule to just be with us.

Our Menu:

Squash-Apple Soup with Nutmeg Cream and Spiced Pecans
Carrot Ginger Soup
Whole Wheat Herb French Bread
Salad with Pickled Squash & Beets, Cranberries, Garden Carrots & Tomatoes, Bacon & Parmesan Cheese served with Homemade Vinaigrette Salad Dressings
Cinnamon Cranberry Scones with Clotted Cream, Peach Butter & Raspberry Jam
Zucchini Bread & Pumpkin Bread

I had made the soups in advance and just warmed them up. That just left the bread, scones & salad to put together that morning. Other than forgetting the scones in the oven and over baking them, everything turned out just fine. We enjoyed our leisurely lunch and then moved to the family room for our desserts & drinks. As the snow fell, we enjoyed our peaceful time warmed with the joy of new friendships.

What a wonderful day it was!

Summer in a Jar

You all know I love hot tea and I do drink it even when it is hot outside, but I also love iced tea. If I know I'm going to be out and about I usually just toss a big tea bag into a quart mason jar and add a few springs of mint or lemon balm and water. I twist on one of the plastic lids and am ready to roll. I've brewed it in the fridge overnight so it's cold and ready to go the next morning. I've also taken a just assembled jar and left it in the van to steep on the dash. Not as cold, but still refreshing.

Today we're headed to the library. I'll be sure to grab my jar to take with us. I'd brewed a bunch of herbal iced teas for dinner last night, so I'm all set.

I had my Bunco group over and had such a wonderful time with everyone! We had supper together and dessert and then just kept talking. We never ended up playing.

They were asking me questions about how we've changed things here at home. I ended up passing around jars of all the stuff I make now and sharing what everything was. The deodorant was a big hit!

It was such a neat time to share with the ladies I love in real life. I figured they thought I was just crazy, but they were really curious and even want to learn how to make things, too! I'll share more in another post soon.

Have a great day!

Summer Days

***Thank you everyone for your kind words on the last post. They mean a lot. Thank you for all your prayers as well. It is such a huge burden lifted.***

Last Tuesday, I helped host a party at Janna's house for our friend, Joanne. She is the one that introduced Janna and I about a year ago. Now she's off on a new adventure moving to Phoenix for one year. They both did posts on the party here and here and included links to other blogging buddies we know. Blogging has been a wonderful introduction to some wonderful ladies I wouldn't have otherwise met. I fact, I met Joanne through blogging, too!

It is hard to even think of saying good-bye to Joanne. I will miss her so much. SO MUCH!!! She has added such richness to my life. I am glad the move is to only be for a year. I think I'd have to go after her if she stayed longer! She really is wonderful.

This Tuesday Janna and I took the kids to Berry Patch Farms, our home away from home each summer and autumn. Seriously, if you are anywhere remotely close to Denver you should go there. It's so fun to pick the strawberries and raspberries, but they also have a ton of other organic produce. I tried so many new fruits and veggies since I first started going there years ago. I've learned so much, too!

We had such a fun day with our kiddos hauling wagons of berries and boys. Pumpkin and Anne are just a few weeks apart in age and I'm planning to marry them off when they are of age. Jack and Dumpling are a few months apart and they all play really well together. The wagons were a perfect height for Jack and Dumpling's All-You-Can-Eat Buffet. We even made a new friend that Anne christened Strawberry the Frog. Quick catching, Janna! After our hours of picking everyone came back here to our home for lunch.

After we ate the kids played while Janna and I put together a batch of Healing Balm. Since I'd already steeped the herbs and oils before we just melted the beeswax and adding the rest of the oils. She picked what extra essential oils she wanted for more fragrance to each jar and it all went together in a flash. (BTW-Janna~How was it once it set?)

I absolutely love this recipe!!! I've been putting it on scratches, bumps, bruises, and bites. It totally takes the itch out of bug bites for me. I'll steeped some more of the herb oil in the next few days to have some on hand for more batches. The directions are here for you. I took a jar myself for my gift at Bunco that night. They are getting used to my lotions and potions.

One of the gals asked me what else I'd been making that was new. I told her I had made deodorant that day. I had the ingredients in the kitchen. It took just a few minutes to mix up and seems to work great. I wasn't too sure about trying it, but I'm glad I did. Directions are here if you are interested. I mixed equal parts cornstarch and baking soda in a half-pint wide mouth jar. I stirred in about 5 tablespoons of coconut oil and some lavender essential oil. I'll experiment more next time with more or less oil, but it really works well so far! I guess there are women who just glow, I'm just not one of them. After gardening in the afternoon sun for over an hour yesterday and two workouts later, I'm happy with this stuff.

Yesterday I started my canning. This became this:
After being inspired by this recipe I added part of a vanilla bean to the first batch of jam using the jam recipe I had. Yum! I made the second batch just the plain way and look forward to tasting the difference. I'm thinking a fresh batch of scones are in order this weekend!

Oh, remember Bacon Bits? This was her picture last year with Pumpkin:

This year:
Yep. It's bad. And no, she's not pregnant! Guess she likes the food, too.

(Janna seems to be the only one remembering her camera lately, so most of these pictures are credited to her. She does a nice job, doesn't she?)

My baby has a star

and I have wonderful friends.

I went to Bunco last night, my first time away from the boys since this mess all started. I am so glad I went. At the end of the evening my friends presented me with a large package and a card. I wept. A lot. And that was before I even knew what it was.

They named a star for Little Jimmy. We know he is in Heaven amongst the stars--now he has one of his very own. They had tried to get everything done to present it to me on his due date last month, but were unable to. That's fine. The timing was perfect.

Only one of the ladies knew before last night what's been happening around here. I had her share with everyone, as I was crying too much to. They were wonderful. Afterwards they all gathered around me and prayed.

Nothing has changed as far a the situation with social services, but we're doing better. Pumpkin is running and playing as much as he can--with one arm--and two parents constantly cautioning. He's being such a super kid with it all.

Sweetheart goes into the orthopedic today for his broken hand and to talk to the doctor about what kind of tests can be done to see why he and Pumpkin break bones so easily. We'll see what the doctor says. It's the ortho that Pumpkin saw for his leg, not the one we saw last week for the arm.

This is all far from over, but we are trying to just live, pray, trust and not fear as much as possible. Your sweet comments, and prayers mean so much. My thanks to each one of you.

Always in Our Hearts

This is on our tree.

A gift from a wonderful friend in memory of Jimmy.

She had given it to me at his passing.

She brought flowers this week to comemorate his due date this weekend.

I am blessed with such a dear friend, aren't I?

He will be always in our hearts.

How I long to hold him in my arms.

Some day.

How I wish it was today.

Guess Where We Went Today?

Ok, not a tough thing to guess if you've been reading here at all lately. We met up with some new friends today at Berry Patch Farms. Katie and I connected on-line a long time ago through Sandy's Tea Society. Since then, she's commented here now and again, but today was the first time we've met in person.

She, and her kids, were such a delight to hang out with! We spent some time out in the fields picking raspberries then enjoyed our lunch a the picnic tables under the giant cottonwood trees. The chickens and turkeys and Bacon Bits were all out and about enjoying their picnic lunches as well from all the food the kiddos seem to drop on the ground.
I thought this post would be longer, I've got so much more to share! However, someone has just awakened from his nap, so I must go. Hope you're enjoying this incredible Autumn day!

A Quiet Day At Home

We've had a busy little week here. I've had a new friend in on Monday for lunch, another friend here Wednesday for tea, and will have another friend come over on Friday for lunch. Tuesday we did grocery shopping and Bunco that evening, plus we tucked in a quick trip to the farm yesterday morning. Each thing has been wonderful, but I confess to being glad to not have to go anywhere today.
I've got some "stocking up" baking to do of bagels and tortillas and maybe some more bread. Having guests over means a lot of bread has been enjoyed. I baked two loaves of sandwich bread on Monday and a loaf of braided rosemary and thyme french bread. We had our bread, salad and chicken salad for our lunch.
Yesterday my friends Terri brought over her two youngest for tea. We had Cucumber Radish Sandwiches, Tomato Sandwiches and Chicken Salad Sandwiches. I sliced up some Zucchini Bread, and served Orange Cranberry Spice Scones with Devon Cream and Spiced Peach Butter. We enjoyed our Earl Grey Tea and the kids had iced tea with the soft music in the background and the light of autumn candles and oil lamps.
Tomorrow's guest has a gluten allergy, so no bread will be needed. I'm thinking of making Tasha Tudor's Egg Souffle and a nice big salad for lunch. She's planning on bringing a dessert that she can have.
It's been so nice to have friends come over. It's so nice to have friends after being so lonely for so long. God has really blessed me with some truly delightful ladies. Not all are kindred spirits, of course, but it is good to have companions for the journey of life, is it not?
I've been enjoying reading Persuasion again. Though not as well known as some of Jane's other novels, I find that it is one of my favorites. It's a quiet story with wonderful characters and a sense of hope. A book, a pot of Earl Grey, my boys playing, doughs rising, all make for a wonderful day! Hope yours is as lovely. I think we'll plan for a late afternoon stroll through the neighborhood as well to enjoy this wonderful weather. Wouldn't that make it all complete?
***
Here are some verses that I am praying for my friends, both on-line and in-life. Hope it blesses you today!
Colossians 3:9-12
For this reason,
since the day we heard about you,
we have not stopped praying for you.
We continually ask God
to fill you with the knowledge of his will
through all the wisdom
and understanding that the Spirit gives,
so that you may live a life
worthy of the Lord
and please him in every way:
bearing fruit in every good work,
growing in the knowledge of God,
being strengthened with all power
according to his glorious might
so that you may have
great endurance and patience,
and giving joyful thanks
to the Father,
who has qualified you
to share in the inheritance
of his people
in the kingdom of light.

Company's Coming!

The salad is in the refrigerator, the iced tea is cooling, the salad dressing is made, the brownies are cooling and waiting to be cut--except for the one I had to try for quality control purposes, of course.
The table is set. The candles are waiting to be lit. I tried to think of the last time we used candles. Then I remembered, it was before Pumpkin started eating at the regular table. Coincidence? I think not! We used to use them all the time. Tonight's are just tealights in some low mother of pearl candle holders and set out of a certain red-headed boy's reach.
I am off to get ready with an hour to spare. Everything is clean and ready. By the time I finished curling my hair the boys should be ready to get up. I am calm. This is so nice.
Sweetheart once declared I wasn't allowed to invite anyone over anymore because I would be such a stress case and drive him nuts. I was. Now, things are ready to go early and I am happy. Why? I'm no longer trying to impress anyone. Learning that hospitality is to bless, not impress, helps a lot. So does keeping it easy and letting others help. Our guests are bringing the main dish. It feels weird, but honestly, right now, I'm glad we planned it this way. I also decided to skip a bunch of extras we don't really need and to just do a tried and true dessert that I know we'll all like since I served it the last time they were here!
Tonight, I will just enjoy--our home, our friends and the blessing of sharing a meal together. It's a nice change. Thank you, Lord, for changing my heart.

Joy in the Journey

I awakened this morning to the sound of the trains passing. Apparently, Pumpkin did as well as he was up and talking within seconds. I've been wanting to get up earlier than everyone else so that I may have a more peaceful start to the day, to have time for devotions and exercise. Awakening simply because someone is crying is not the most pleasant start to the day. However, getting up early the week of the time change just hasn't worked for me.

Sweetheart issued a "Sunrise Alert" and I went to look. Beautiful. Brilliant shades of pink and purple light the sky, just for a few moments before the gray of the day overtook them. I chose to let Pumpkin stay in bed for a little bit playing by himself, hoping he'd go back to sleep and knowing that I'd better grab the few minutes I could to get the day started off right.

I fixed myself a cup of coffee and curled up in the chair with my new book that arrived yesterday, The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. I have often seen this book quoted in other books, but have not read it myself. I took some time to read the introduction and the first two chapters. I am looking forward to diving more deeply into it over this week. The introduction suggested reading it through once quickly to gain a sense of the book, but then to continue to reread it. I do that a lot, do you? I am so eager to read through a book, but then to linger rereading it several times, if it is worth it.

Some books only warrant one reading, if that, but some books are like friends that I want to spend more time with getting to know more deeply. Taking the time to peel back the layers of letters, to find what is at the heart; to unlock that elusive quality of writing that makes a book or story sink in and stir my soul.

Some writers do that. I want to just steep their words into my heart, forever changing it, as the leaves steep in my teapot creating tea from what was simply water. Taking the time to pour into me, changing the very nature of who I am. Sipping at the words, again and again, filling up and refreshing my very being.

Some friends do that as well. I spoke today with an old friend. We met in high school, our group bonding hard and fast, linking our hearts and lives forever. Even now, when some of us have not seen each other in over ten years, we can feel as though we just passed each other in the halls on our way to class earlier today picking up the threads of conversation and weaving our lives back together.

She and I spoke in January after not talking to one another in years, not because anything was wrong, but life and kids and multiple moves for each had kept us apart. Occasionally, I'd hear about what she was up to through other friends, but life just kept going. I tried several times over the years to reconnect, but numbers were disconnected, addresses no longer forwarding. For a time I thought it had been too long, that a call now would seem like too little too late. I didn't want to give up though. After several months of calling and missing one another, we were able to finally talk.

What a joy that was for me! Just hearing her voice brought back a flood of memories. How I wish that we lived closer! What fun it would be to just laugh and cook and eat together. To just hang out, without really having anything that needed to be done would be wonderful. How I miss those times of just being with one another. I want to see her face. To have one of her hugs. To just laugh together. To introduce our husbands, her girls and my boys, to just be together.

Today's conversation picked right back up as though time has not passed, as though we were just together. I've recalled her words many times since our call in January that she is not who she was back then. True. She is now a wife, a mother to four girls. I can sense in her words a deeper closeness to Jesus. And yet, and yet, I hear her heart and know that that has not changed. Though she may play the violin and has grown in many ways since the days when algebra classes mattered, the core of who she is sounds the same, just deeper.

And I wonder. How would she see me today? Yes, the hair is longer, the laugh lines deeper, the figure fuller, but seen through the eyes of one who has known me longer than most, what would she see? Would she see a deeper faith in me? One who has grown in the ways that matter? If we met today for the very first time, would she want to be my friend? I hope so.

I've never had such friends again. Oh, how I long for that closeness, that unguardedness, that totally sharing of who we are without fear of rejection or derision. To simple pour ourselves into each other knowing that it's safe. I miss that. I miss you, Joy.

Maybe I am feeling a bit too reflective today, weepy even, as this year for me comes to a close. I am deep in thought, in prayer, in hope. I want more for this second half of life. More love, more depth, more of Jesus. Less of me, less of things and distractions, less noise (not likely with boys!) less inner turmoil over the things that just don't matter. More peace in Him. Seeking, always seeking, growing, loving. Because really, LOVE is all that matters in the end. I want to be known as a woman who loved.

Silly side note to self: Just because grapefruit are eight for one dollar, does not mean that I need to buy all eight. I wonder if anyone besides bloggers take pictures of their food. It is sort of an odd phenomenon, isn't it?
